The crowd tonight is filled with fans wearing Chicago Blackhawks jerseys. Instead of coming to watch a broadcast of game 4 of the Stanley Cup, they are here to see Hozier. While most concerts in Pritzker Pavilion use a huge screen behind the stage, the band has placed a large black backdrop with Hozier written across the front. The clouds have parted and the weather is perfect for tonight’s outdoor concert.
Hozier takes the stage and opens with Angel of Small Death & The Codeine Scene. Midway through his set, he introduces Alana Henderson to sing In a Week with him. He describes the tune as a love song to the hills of Ireland and that is exactly how it sounds.
In a tribute to the city, he plays a Skip James cover, Illinois Blues. It fits in smoothly with the rest of his set and the influence of Chicago Blues on his music becomes clear. He closes the night out with Work Song to the audiences delight. Throughout his set, he thanked Dawes for opening at least five times. It’s clear he has a great respect for other artists and is happy to share the stage with them and sing covers of their songs. He proved proved tonight that he has much more to offer than just his big single, “Take Me To Church.”
